	The Plain English Guide by Martin Cutts This guide is for anyone who writes public information leaflets, letters and reports. It has a very useful chapter on layout problems and solutions. It contains everything you ever wanted to know about plain language, word choice, voice, legal language.
	Plain English by Collinson, Kirkup, Kyd and Slocombe Contains a useful chapter on references and bibliographies.
	The Complete Plain Words by Sir Ernest Gower In the author's words: "The main purpose of this book is to help officials in their use of written English as a tool of their trade." It needs no further recommendation!
	Grammar in Plain English by Harriet Diamond and Phyllis Dutwin A solid guide for Key Stage 3 students of English and advanced ESL learners.

	Punctuate it Right! by Harry Shaw Easy to follow. Never put a comma in the wrong place again!
	Troublesome Words by Bill Bryson An extremely entertaining and informative book. Even if you are not at all interested in English language, you are sure to find this book is fun to read.

Writing skills

	Correct Writing by Butler Hickman and Overby Everything you need to know about writing.
	Clear writing by Diana Bonet This is a workbook, so you get lots of practice to help you gain confidence.
	How to Write by Herbert Meyer and Julia Meyer An excellent and concise guide to the basics of business writing. If you don't have much time to read around the subject, read this one.
	On Writing Well by William Zinsser A good all-round guide to writing non-fiction, particularly useful for article writers and budding columnists.
